As we suspected, Warner Bros. was indeed seeking a young Asian actress for the role of Cassandra Cain in Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey movie.
Variety reports that young newcomer Ella Jay Basco has seemingly landed the role of Cassandra Cain in the film and is currently in negotiations with the studio. Cain is expected to basically be movie’s MacGuffin. The DC Comics character is one of the many who have been part of the Bat-Family, taking up the mantle of Batgirl.
In DC Comics, Cain is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva, and is deprived of speech and human contact during her childhood as conditioning to become the world’s greatest assassin. She eventually befriends Bruce Wayne and goes on to become Batgirl.
Interesting enough, fellow Batgirl Barbara Gordon had originally been part of Birds of Prey only to be scrubbed from the script.
Margot Robbie will reprise the role of Harley Quinn with new additions that include Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Jurnee Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. While unconfirmed by the studio, Ewan McGregor is reportedly playing the film’s villain Black Mask.
As I’ve previously reported at OmegaUnderground, filming is set to begin mid-January in Los Angeles, California.
Warner Bros. has set the release date for Birds of Prey on my birthday which is February 7th, 2020.
