Some interesting plot news concerning Josh Boone’s upcoming New Mutants movie coming from EntertainmentWeekly as the film will include a same-sex love story between characters played by Maisie Williams and Blu Hunt.
The pair play mutants Rahne Sinclair aka Wolfsbane and Danielle Moonstar aka Mirage the upcoming X-Men spinoff.
Josh Boone confirmed the news to EW.
Word may have leaked early, but Boone confirms that the story he penned with screenwriter Knate Lee features a same-sex “love story” between Rahne Sinclair (Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams) and Danielle Moonstar (Another Life‘s Blu Hunt). “It’s sort of the spine and focus of some of the character-driven stuff in the film,” the movie-maker says.
Maisie Williams, who plays Rahne also commented on the relationship.
WILLIAMS: “Rahne and Dani have a telepathic connection in the comics, and so we just wanted to extend that in the film and put that within reality. If they really could understand each other on that level, then you’d probably end up falling in love with that person.”
New Mutants will attempt to take a more horror route than previous X-Men films and luckily avoiding reshoots/tinkering from producer Simon Kinberg thanks to the Disney/Fox merger.
Eternals is confirmed to include a same-sex love story as well with Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos playing the MCU’s first gay superhero.
Despite some off-screen teases that Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie might be bisexual, that has yet to fully form in the movies, as there was a call that Valkyrie would be seeking her Queen in Thor: Love & Thunder.
This is certainly a good step in being more exclusive with the characters being shown in the superhero genre which you’d hope would echo in other big studio films.
The New Mutants will be released on April 3rd without too much competition as both Peter Rabbit 2 and No Time To Die left the month of April.
