It’s hard to argue that Jon Bernthal’s take on The Punisher’s Frank Castle is one of the best versions we’ve been given over the years. Yet, his future playing the character is currently in limbo (although, we have a good idea it’s over). That hasn’t stopped the promotional train for its upcoming second season as Netflix has revealed a January drop date for the Marvel Comics series. The video that was posted to YouTube by Netflix announcing the January slate has since been removed.
I liked a lot of what they did with the first season, so I’ll be watching when it drops.
This is good and bad news at the same time. As there is an expectation that The Punisher will be canceled not unlike the recent cancellations of Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. The fate of Punisher and Jessica Jones is up-in-the-air, that likely has to do with their upcoming seasons haven’t been released and they’re too scared to pull the band-aid off.
The future of Castle is a little murky as the violent nature of the vigilante character isn’t a good fit for the family-friendly streaming service Disney+, as Disney CEO Bob Iger has said they’re not looking to include mature content. That’s if the character isn’t folded into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and given a reboot of sorts for the films.
