HN Entertainment has been able to confirm that New Mutants production designer Molly Hughes has joined the production team on Ron Howard’s next film Hillbilly Elegy, a Netflix family drama based on the novel by J.D. Vance that will star recent Oscar nominees Amy Adams (Vice) and Glenn Close (The Wife).
The Kings of Summer actor Gabriel Basso recently landed the main role in the film.
Hillbilly Elegy is Vance’s tale of his life growing up dirt poor in rural Appalachia, which became a bestseller thanks to its raw and unflinching yet compassionate portrayal of a poverty-stricken community in which addiction, violence and family disintegration were commonplace. The odds were stacked against him, but after graduating from his public high school, Vance enlisted in the Marines, then later graduated from Ohio State University, and finally Yale Law School. Now a venture capitalist, Vance’s reality couldn’t be further from the one he was born into. He credits a series of mentors with encouraging him to pursue his goals, most importantly his foul-mouthed, gun-toting, tough-loving grandmother known as Mamaw.
Hughes’ other production design credits include Jessica Chastain’s upcoming assassin flick Eve, Disney’s The One and Only Ivan, Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things, and Josh Boone’s The Fault In Our Stars. As an art director, she has worked on Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows 1-2, Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince, and The Bourne Legacy.
Molly’s upcoming film New Mutants is set for release on April 3rd, 2020.
Filming on Hillbilly Elegy is set to begin next month in Atlanta, Georgia, and possibly Cincinnati, Ohio. It’s expected wrap production sometime between August and September.
According to Variety, the film’s production budget is around $45 million and I assume will eventually be running towards an awards campaign.
Ron Howard recently revealed he’s in talks with Lucasfilm for a Willow series sequel to air on Disney+ adding that the creative team would also include Solo: A Star Wars Story screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan along with the casting returning to reprise their roles.
Netflix has yet to give the drama an official release date.
