With Bumblebee receiving critical praise, Paramount Pictures and the team behind the film are hoping to find success at the box office to continue to lay the groundwork for more Transformers films.
While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Longtime Transformers Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura says that there are currently plans on producing two new spin-offs.
According to di Bonaventura, their first choice was a Bumblebee movie because “he’s such a loved figure, and he’s also more emotional than Optimus”. Now that Bumblebee has had a positive impact on the audiences who were dubious, it seems that an Optimus Prime movie might be closer than we think despite di Bonaventura’s fear on doing a Optimus Prime spin-off. Di Bonaventura says:
“It will be hard with Optimus, he is always right, very stoic and is a man of few words … It is kind of like saying, ‘Lets do a movie about Obi-Wan Kenobi?’ But how much is there to say about Obi-Wan? It is not so easy.”
However, it seems that the writing team behind Bumblebee have their Energon sensors set on a sequel to Bumblebee as di Bonaventura says that the team now have a good sense of where a second film could go and what kind of directions future films can go in.
In addition to that, di Bonaventura has confirmed the production of an animated movie set purely on Cybertron that is still set within the canon and that dwells deep into Cybertronian mythology.
Directed by Travis Knight from a script written by Christina Hodson, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld, Pamela Adlon, John Cena, Stephen Schneider, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Ian Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, and Grace Dzienny.
Bumblebee is in theaters now.
