Maverick’s Eric Warren Singer

Lionsgate has announced via Variety that they’ll be launching a new spy franchise starring Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class, Inglourious Basterds) in the role of Austrian spy Malko Linge, who was a freelance CIA operative. Based on the S.A.S. novels by Gerard de Villiers, the script will be penned by Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick, American Hustle).

Michael Fassbender will produce and star in the Lionsgate spy thriller “Malko,” based on Gerard de Villiers’ S.A.S. series, with the studio planning to launch a franchise with the project.

Eric Warren Singer, who was nominated for an Academy Award for best original screenplay for “American Hustle,” will write the screenplay.

The S.A.S. franchise follows Malko Linge, an Austrian nobleman and freelance CIA operative who spent his formative years in a special Nazi work camp for captured spies. Malko is a gentleman warrior without a country who works according to his own moral code and lives with a wicked wit and a lust for life.

This isn’t the first time Fassbender has attached himself to potential franchise with The Snowman and Assassin’s Creed being the last couple franchise starters that feel flat on their faces.

Fassbender could end up getting his Bond franchise without actually the baggage of the Bond role as I’m sure Eon would be looking at a younger actor for Bond 26. His next project is the Kung Fury sequel and shoots over the summer.

When filming begins is a little unknown at this point as they don’t have a director attached or a release date.
