With recent information about Ben Affleck’s original idea for The Batman before leaving the project, we felt it was worth revisiting what we know so far about the upcoming Batman project. Titled The Batman, the film is written and directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes). The actor bringing this interpretation of the character to life is Robert Pattinson (Twilight). Since his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga, Pattinson has beefed up his acting resume with roles in Good Time, The Rover, and High Life. Besides the main role of Bruce Wayne/Batman being recast, it’s also expected that all previous Batman-related roles such as Alfred will be recast to best fit Matt Reeves’ vision.
The Story & Setting
According to Matt Reeves, the film will not be a standard superhero film with action and science-fiction elements. Instead, The Batman will be an original noir-driven story allowing for a character-driven detective narrative. When putting teases from multiple interviews together, it appears as if The Batman will explore a detective case and/or conspiracy connected to Gotham City’s history and criminal underground. Based upon recent filming rumors, it appears the movie may take place over the winter holiday.
Regarding the inspiration for the type of story his movie will tell, Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter in January, “The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime.”
Reported by multiple outlets, the current group of antagonists confirmed to appear includes Penguin, Catwoman, and Riddler. Another A-list Batman villain heavily rumored to appear is Two-Face aka Harvey Dent. The Penguin is believed to be the main villain of the film as other characters from Batman’s rogues’ gallery are used in various capacities. Firefly and Mad Hatter have also been name-dropped as villains set to appear. Personally, I hope another villain truly is the main antagonist since all of these characters have been depicted on the big screen in some capacity.
For actors rumored to play the villains, the first major rumor was Josh Gad as The Penguin. As of writing this article, that rumor seems to have gained no traction. Instead, the most recent rumor is that Paul Walter (I, Tonya, BlackKkKlansman) is being sought after for Penguin. John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) is rumored for Harvey Dent/Two-Face. Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) are reportedly in the running for The Riddler. Vanessa Kirby (Hobbs & Shaw) is on a “wish list” from WB execs to play Catwoman.
Release Date & Production
The official release date for The Batman, as of August 2019, is June 25, 2021. A version of the script suitable for filming is also reportedly complete. The expected rating for the film is also PG-13, as is common with most superhero movies. Current reports target filming for early 2020 which may be connected to rumors that the movie is set during the winter season. Greig Fraser (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) joined the film as the cinematographer with production design work by James Chinlund (The Lion King).
