Matt Reeves Talks ‘The Batman’ Says It Will Have A Rogues Gallery of Villains – Comments On Josh Gad’s Campaign To Play Penguin

We’ve been highly anticipating Matt Reeves’ new take on the Batman franchise and patiently waiting as the writer-director as he’s been writing a new script for the project.

Here is what Matt had to say about his take with his incarnation titled The Batman (admits that is the current title they’re using in-house) while recently speaking with TheHollywoodReporter.

“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

Matt also confirms they’ll be casting very soon (early casting details have been leaked) and reveals we’ll see a Rogues Gallery in the movie. This would reaffirm at least three villains are showing up in the movie, which is expected to include The Penguin.

“There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.”

Reeves also commented on Josh Gad’s social media campaign to be cast as The Penguin with the outlet as well. They also report that a current draft is about 160 pages which is expected to be trimmed down.

“I love Josh Gad,” said Reeves, noting that his son is in class with the actor’s daughter. “We’re good friends.”

One thing that was revealed last week is that Ben Affleck won’t be in front of the camera on the project as there has been plenty of chatter that a new actor will be cast as a younger Bruce Wayne, possibly someone in their 20s or 30s. Whoever they end up casting we expect to see it become a bit of an obsession for fans to find out who it might be.

Warner Bros. recently gave The Batman a release date of June 25th, 2021.
