Our pals over at SlashFilm are reporting that Marvel Studios will be producing another interesting series for Disney+, this time it will be based on the issues of What If?. Basically, a random assortment of various non-canon comic books that would take familiar characters from Marvel Comics and skew their mythology into a fantastical manner for a one issue event. It sounds like the Disney+ version will also not be canon.

Here is the report from SlashFilm.

We have exclusively learned that Marvel Studios will be producing a new television series for the Disney+ streaming service based on the popular What If comic book series. The new animated show will be overseen by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, but the stories will not be canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The idea is that they could potentially have some of the main actors from the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe movies reprise their roles in the animated series, which would imagine alternate possibilities from another dimension. The time commitment for voice acting is a whole lot less than for live-action productions, which could accommodate some of the biggest Marvel talent. The series would function as an anthology, just like the comic book series, with each episode tackling a different premise.

I have confirmed the information above with three separate sources. Currently, it’s unclear if they will use any other storylines from the comics for inspiration other than the one mentioned above. It’s possible that many of the scenarios will be entirely new, and we know that they will be based on what we have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not the comic canon.

They also state that announcements concerning the project could be made next month.

What If? could end up their own anthology series, not unlike Black Mirror or Twilight Zone. Giving them the ability to tinker with the MCU and have bizarre stories, without having lasting effects on the overall franchise’s canon.

Other shows being developed for Disney+ include a Loki series, a Vision and Scarlet Witch series, and a team-up series featuring Bucky Barnes and Falcon. It’ll be interesting to see if any of the rumored shows will also get picked-up or stay rumors.
