Marvel Studios is indeed now in early development on Captain Marvel 2 according to a new report from TheHollywoodReporter. They’ve revealed that WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell is about to finalize a deal to pen the sequel’s script along with the news that Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden won’t be returning.
However, suggesting that Fleck and Boden might be sticking around the MCU by potentially working on a Disney+ series instead of a feature film.
Sources say that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-wrote and directed the initial film hit, will not return to helm the sequel but are in talks to remain in the Marvel Universe and direct a possible Disney+ series. Marvel is hoping to find a female filmmaker for Captain Marvel 2 and is eyeing a potential 2022 release.
This is certainly big news considering that the WandaVision (written by McDonnell) series happens to include an adult Monica Rambeau and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s cosmic counterpart S.W.O.R.D., which both very well could have direct implications for Captain Marvel 2.
The outlet also speculates that Captain Marvel 2 could be ready for release in 2022, however, with Ant-Man 3, Black Panther 2, and Guardians of The Galaxy 3 expected to begin filming in 2021 and released in 2022 that seems unlikely.
Brie Larson will be returning as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, it remains to be seen if Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury will be returning but with him building a space station (the S.W.O.R.D. facility?) with the help of Skrulls in the middle of space I think there is a good shot he will.
I wouldn’t be shocked if Captain Marvel 2 ends up starting production in early 2022 and released sometime in 2023. I think we need to see more concrete production info on the film before making estimates as they haven’t started on a script.
WandaVision is set to begin airing on Disney+ this fall, so it might give us a better idea of what to expect from Captain Marvel 2.
