When the Disney-Fox merger was officially completed in mid-March one of the first things revealed was that Deadpool would be the Fox/Marvel era character to make the jump to Marvel Studios. Meaning he wouldn’t be getting the reboot treatment and would likely have his films be retroactively added to the MCU (that latter part hasn’t been made official as of yet).
However, despite script development on both Deadpool 3 and X-Force before the merger, there haven’t been any announcements made what Marvel plans to do with the character or those scripts. Disney’s Bob Iger has been adamant they’ll be pursuing Deadpool sequels, with the aim to keep them R-rated.
Yesterday, our pals over at MCUCosmic ran an interesting rumor concerning how Marvel may attempt to introduce Deadpool to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Those potential plans apparently include adding him to Spider-Man 3 (I assume in a supporting lead role) and his own limited series on Disney+. Of course, both those two projects would have to be PG-13 since Spider-Man and Disney+ are more geared towards Disney audiences, which are families.
The only issue I see is that this could only confuse audiences about whether Deadpool is an R-rated character or a PG-13 character. Bob Iger has talked about not confusing audiences when referring to releasing R-rated Marvel projects. Well, inserting Deadpool in Spider-Man 3 is only going to add to that confusion from a standpoint, even if the two characters have their own team-up comic book.
Deadpool 3 I feel like has always been on the table, as Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been writing a script previous to the merger closing. We don’t know if Disney’s Alan Horn or Feige has given them the go-ahead to actually finish it though. They recently exited Pirates 6, so there is a good chance they’ve pivoted back to working on Deadpool 3.
