On the heels of the recent news that Jai Courtney and Viola Davis are returning for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, another bit of news dropped from Variety.
They seemingly confirm that Margot Robbie is indeed coming back to play Harley Quinn, but it doesn’t look like Idris Elba is replacing Will Smith as Deadshot after all. They now state that Elba will instead play a new character altogether leaving the door open for Will Smith to reprise the Deadshot role in the future.
Though it was previously reported that Elba would be replacing Will Smith as Deadshot in the new pic, sources now tell Variety that all parties including director James Gunn have decided to move on from the Deadshot character, with Elba playing a new character in “The Suicide Squad.”
With this decision, it looks like the only two characters expected to return are Harley Quinn with Margot Robbie reprising that role, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller. Gunn is in the process of casting the remaining team members with production expected to start in the fall.
Collider had mentioned a wave of new DC characters that would be introduced in the film which included Otis Flannegan aka Ratcatcher, Nanaue aka King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, and Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker. There is a good chance that Peacemaker ends up the role that Idris ends up taking as a surrogate for Smit’s Deadshot.
Doesn’t look like it’ll be as much as a reboot as previously thought.
Warner Bros. has given The Suicide Squad a release date of August 6th, 2021.
