Deadline reports that Amazon’s Lord of The Rings series has found it’s lead villain with Game of Thrones actor Joseph Mawle, who will reportedly play a character named Oren (a version of Earendil?).
Game Of Thrones alum Joseph Mawle is set as a lead opposite Will Poulter and Markella Kavenagh in Amazon Studios’ Lord of the Rings TV series, I have learned. Amazon had no comment.
No details about the characters are being revealed but it is believed that English actor Mawle will play the series’ lead villain, Oren, opposite Poulter’s young hero Beldor and female lead Tyra (Kavenagh).
The actors/characters on the Middle-Earth series so far look like this.
- Markella Kavenagh as Tyra
- Will Poulter as Beldor (Baldor?)
- Joseph Mawle as Oren (Earendil?)
- Maxim Baldry as ?
I’m slightly curious if these names are simply placeholders as they don’t actually exist within the existing J.R.R. Tolkien mythos unless they’ve indeed crafted a series with original characters.
Mawle played Ned Stark’s brother Benjen Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones series, Jon Snow’s uncle that inspires him to join the Night’s Watch at Castle Black.
The series will be officially taking place during the Second Age of Middle-Earth giving them plenty of wiggle-room to not rehash material previously used in The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings trilogy, as the Second Age takes place many many years before all that as Sauron has yet to be defeated, the creation of the Rings of Power, and ancient kingdoms like Numenor are thriving before their downfall.
It’ll be interesting to see if they’ll be covering Morgoth in the series as he is the precursor Middle-Earth villain to Sauron.
Filming is expected to take place in Auckland, New Zealand, which would mean that Stone Street Studios in Wellington won’t be the production facility after all.
Amazon hasn’t set an official release date for the first season.
