Sony’s Charlie’s Angels reboot led by Kristen Stewart was a large flop over the weekend as the film ended up taking in $8.4 million and essentially killing any chances of a sequel, the idea was to reinvigorate the franchise and to crank out multiple films.
However, this might not be the only bad news for upcoming projects starring Kristen Stewart.
Early box office tracking from BoxOfficePro is suggesting that the 20th Century Fox flick Underwater (which certainly looks interesting to me) is another potential flop come January.
Underwater’s early domestic box office tracking places it in the range of $5-10 million, which is something Fox likely doesn’t want to hear after movies such as Dark Phoenix and Ad Astra didn’t do well with audiences in 2019.
UNDERWATER is a film that follows a crew of underwater researchers who must scramble to safety after an earthquake devastates their subterranean laboratory.
On a budget of $65 million, those numbers certainly aren’t great news, but it’s still early and the awareness of the project hasn’t really kicked in as the film’s marketing has been tepid so far.
The upcoming release directed by William Eubank stars Kristen Stewart (Panic Room, Charlie’s Angels), T.J. Miller (Deadpool, Silicon Valley), Vincent Cassel (Jason Bourne, Ocean’s Twelve), John Gallagher Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane), and Jessica Henwick (Godzilla vs Kong, Star Wars: The Force Awakens).
To me, Underwater looks like a throwback to the movies I grew up from the 1980-1990s such as Leviathan and Alien 3, but general audiences will be the ones to make or break the film.
The last two years have shown that audiences have become picky with their box office dollars and studios can’t bank on established franchise titles to make the money they used to.
Even original films like Underwater have been struggling so it’s been rough across the board. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that these numbers are particularly low due to awareness before the real marketing starts.
Underwater is set for release on January 10th, 2020.
