Marvel’s Kevin Feige spoke with TheHollywoodReporter for an in-depth podcast interview and the subject pivoted to reports that he would be producing a new Star Wars feature film.
While Kevin keeps mostly mum about details he certainly suggests his desire to tackle new characters and places, something I think is an excellent idea and I think really should be the way to go with feature films.
THR: Recently learned that you’ll be working on a Star Wars film, which is very exciting. What do you most want to bring to that universe?”
FEIGE: “I love that world and I love the notion of exploring new people and new places in that universe. But that’s sort of all that can be said for now.”
THR: Bob Iger and Mark Hamill and people involved with the Star Wars franchise have said that they acknowledge that there has been, at certain points, a Star Wars fatigue. People just were maybe a little inundated. What is the secret to avoiding it, it never seems to have affected Marvel, which has put out more movies in a year than Star Wars ever did. So how do you avoid that?
FEIGE: “Well they’ve made about five movies in about five years and it’s made over five billion dollars, so I think they’re doing just fine with Star Wars. And Rise of Skywalker looks incredible to me.”
Looking at the upcoming video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order feels like something they should be doing focusing on brand new characters and expanding the mythology by adding new aliens/planets.
Also switching-up the era of when these movies are set would be a really good way to distance themselves from the shadow of the original films.
Benioff and Weiss were reportedly working on a trilogy of films that would have explored the Jedi origins (likely prior to the Knights of The Old Republic as they were well established at that time) and BuzzFeed reported that screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island, Avatar, Altered Carbon, Alita: Battle Angel, Ghost In The Shell) was working on an Old Republic trilogy for Lucasfilm.
Neither of these reports have been confirmed by Lucasfilm/Disney, but Kathleen Kennedy revealed to MTVNews earlier in the year they were indeed developing something related to Knights of The Old Republic.
Rian Johnson is still attached to create a trilogy of films and has suggested his movies are not connected to the Skywalker Saga.
We still have no idea what Feige’s project will ultimately be and without a screenwriter announced we have no idea when it could go into production.
