Fandango was able to speak with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige during the press junket in London for Spider-Man: Far From Home.
One of their questions specifically asked by the outlet was if fans could expect to see the newly acquired Fox characters (X-Men, Wolverine, Deadpool, Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, Galactus, Doctor Doom) be first introduced in other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies before their own. Similar to how Spider-Man and Black Panther had introductions in Captain America: Civil War before moving on to their own solo flicks, might a way to go with a couple of characters.
FEIGE: “Yeah, maybe. You know, oftentimes it just comes down to a specific character in a specific story and a specific way to introduce them,” he said. “So sometimes, like with Spider-Man and Black Panther, that made sense. Then, other times, with characters like Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Thor, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man… it’s fun to introduce them in their own movies first. So it just depends on the story we’re trying to tell.”
They also asked what the brainstorming process is like currently, now that they have access to the new characters and how far along they are with those other projects. Feige seemingly alludes that things haven’t gotten terribly far but will certainly end up fun for them because they’re not just hypothetical ideas any more as they can now add these characters, not just develop what-if scenarios.
FEIGE: “It’s still early days, but it’s been a fun exercise, and it’s one, by the way, that we’ve been doing for years. Every development meeting starts with cool ideas and fun ideas, and our wheels are always turning in terms of what if… to use a Marvel publishing term. What if we did this? What if we did that? What if we had access to such and such characters? That’s how Spider-Man: Homecoming came together in the first place, and it’s fun to now be in this position with the Fox characters, too, because if we come up with a great “What If” we can actually do it.”
Kevin has suggested that X-Men wouldn’t be part of their five-year plans and likely would come much later on, but these comments may support that we could see X-Men or Fantastic Four characters introduced in Phase 4 movies first. At the very least he sounds open to the idea.
Silver Surfer or Galactus could make sense in cosmic MCU movies like Guardians of The Galaxy 3 (James Gunn tired to get them in the original installment) or Captain Marvel 2.
Considering T’Challa was introduced in the pages of Fantastic Four comic books those characters including Doctor Doom showing up in Black Panther 2 wouldn’t be terribly strange either since they have a history of crossovers in the comics.
There is an expectation with talk of Marvel Studios returning to San Diego Comic-Con next month that Kevin Feige will be on hand to reveal some of their Phase 4 plans. What those plans are going to be have been previously known to us with Black Widow (filming), The Eternals, Shang-Chi, Guardians of The Galaxy 3, Doctor Strange 2, and Black Panther 2 already revealed to be in various stages at the studios with some in pre-production stages.
I think Marvel Studios should take their time and get these characters/projects right instead of rushing to meet fan demands, as most are more concerned of seeing these characters on the big screen first as soon as possible and how well it’s executed second.
