Venom has become a massive box office success for Sony Pictures as they launched their Spider-Man spin-offs and there is now confirmation that Venom 2 is moving forward.
Variety now reports that Kelly Marcel (Venom, Cruella, Saving Mr. Banks) is expected to return to pen a script for Venom 2, with Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Woody Harrelson as main villain Carnage returning.
Following box office smash “Venom,” Sony Pictures is putting the wheels in motion for a sequel to the antihero adventure. The studio has tapped Kelly Marcel, one of the screenwriters from the first movie, to pen to the script.
Michelle Williams is expected to rejoin Hardy, as is Woody Harrelson, who will portray Carnage in the sequel. A director has not been set yet, though sources say the studio might look for a new filmmaker as “Venom” helmer Reuben Fleischer will be busy shooting the sequel to Sony’s “Zombieland.”
Although, they state that Zombieland 2 will likely make Ruben Fleischer too busy to tackle the sequel and another director may take over the franchise.
Potential replacements haven’t been revealed, but there is a good chance that filming could begin this summer/fall as it’s expected that their October 2020 release date for an upcoming Marvel project is being held for Venom 2.
Venom has currently earned $855.5 million globally on a budget of $100 million making it one of the biggest success stories for Sony Pictures. For some perspective, Spider-Man: Homecoming earned $880 million globally.
Morbius is the next Spider-Man character to get their own solo film as filming on the Jared Leto vampire flick is expected to begin next month in London, England.
