It’s starting to feel like every other week we learn about another DC Comics feature film in development Warner Bros. Pictures. Just yesterday, TheWrap reported that Blue Beetle nabbed a screenwriter and they just keep adding to the pile of unproduced DC scripts at the studio.

Deadline has now casually revealed that magician heroine Zatanna has her own solo film in the works. However, Deadline failed to mention any details, a screenwriter or if there had been meetings with directors.

Zatanna had been originally planned as being a lead character in the Guillermo del Toro-penned Justice Leauge Dark movie. Zatanna would have appeared alongside Hellblazer, Swamp Thing, Deadman, and The Spectre. Guillmero recently lamented on Twitter that his script is still unproduced (despite his recent Oscar win) among others. It’s still kind of bonkers that Waner Bros. on the project and let del Toro slip away, then again, he wouldn’t have made The Shape of Water leading to his Best Director and Best Picture Oscars.

Swamp Thing would head to DC Universe as a live-action streaming service produced by James Wan, which is currently filming in North Carolina. So there is a good chance that Walter Hamada is interested in tackling the macabre DC characters and more importantly the ones from Justice League Dark.

I guess we can add Zatanna to the list of announced officially/unofficially DC movies since the launch of the DCU. They of that growing list of projects yet to be shot includes Birds of Prey, Suicide Squad 2, The Flash, The Batman, New Gods, Green Lantern Corps., Justice League Part 2, Black Adam, Man of Steel 2, Supergirl, Deadshot, Lobo, Cyborg, Deathstroke, Nightwing, Batgirl, Gotham City Sirens, Harley Quinn and The Joker, Jared Leto’s Joker solo film, Justice League Dark, and Blackhawk.

It’s hard to take seriously that the studio will ever get around to making all of these movies and a handful have already been seemingly scrapped such as Justice League Part 2, Man of Steel 2, and Gotham City Sirens. I’m still excited if they end up pursuing anything involved with the supernatural/horror side of the DC Comics as Marvel Studios doesn’t seem to be terribly interested in that corner of their universe outside of Doctor Strange.

I know this is a long-shot but possibly Guillermo del Toro could circle-back to tackle Zatanna as a backdoor feature to introduce her and a couple of other Justice League Dark characters. He once pitched an early version of Doctor Strange with author/comic book writer Neil Gaiman that was rejected by Marvel, so it’s material he’s obviously interested in.
