Jordan Peele’s ‘Candyman’ Sequel Casts ‘Aquaman’ Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

It looks like Jordan Peele and MGM has found their new Candyman.

According to Variety, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is in talks to star in the upcoming Candyman remake, MGM’s retelling of the classic horror film with Jordan Peele producing. Nia DaCosta, writer and director of Little Woods, is expected to direct the film, with MGM and Win Rosenfeld producing.

The outlet states that Abdul-Mateen has not officially signed on as of yet. Earlier this month it was reported that Get Out and Girl In The Spider’s Web actor Lakeith Stanfield was in talks for a role in the film.

This updated incarnation is being considered a “spiritual sequel” to the original and would focus on the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood, that Candyman roamed. Filming is expected to begin this spring and since it’ll be taking place in Chicago, there is an assumption they’ll film in the city.

Bernard Rose’s original Candyman is based on Clive Barker’s short story The Forbidden.

Candyman is set to scare up theaters on June 12, 2020.
