According to BoxOfficeMojo, the Joker solo movie has crossed $300 million with $306.9 million going into the weekend.
The current weekend estimates via BoxOfficePro place Joker in the number one spot again with a strong second weekend looking at $60+ million.
We are expecting the film to cross the $400-500 million next week as the $55 million budgeted DC Comics movie may have been a risk given the mature rating and tone, seemingly not for the regular fanbase for comic book films.
However, it has managed to make a serious profit for the studio and proved that they don’t need to spend $150-200+ million on their DC projects.
Joker’s domestic box office kicked-off last week surpassing the October opening record previously held by Venom.
This success should help bolster the expected R-ratings of Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
It’ll be curious to see how Warner Bros. moves forward with other “Elseworld/Black Label” movies, Joaquin Phoenix has suggested recently that’s he’s open to a sequel, but nothing seems to be in the works at the moment.
I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that previous DC Comics characters solo films will get a second look such as Sgt. Rock, Lobo, and Deathstroke.
The next DC film out in theaters will be Birds of Prey, which is set for release on February 7th, 2020.
