Today, it was officially announced by Lionsgate that Keanu Reeves’ fourth chapter of the John Wick franchise has been delayed an entire year as it’s looking like they won’t be able to begin shooting in 2020.
The studio has pushed John Wick 4’s release from May 21st, 2021 to May 27th, 2022, this would give the impression that production will not begin until an unknown date in 2021.
This had been recently telegraphed by director Chad Stahelski when speaking with Collider, pointing out that Matrix 4’s production would be the priority for Keanu, leaving the next John Wick film hanging until that completes filming. Chad also revealing that he and David Leitch were participating in Matrix 4 helping to choreograph scenes and train people for the action film.
STAHELSKI: “Between how much we want to expand the John Wick — let’s just call it a ‘franchise’, I guess — and the pandemic, I couldn’t tell you a release date for the next one. I mean, Matrix was only four weeks in when this all happened. So, Keanu’s gotta go finish his commitment up on The Matrix, which is a big deal and which I think will probably take him until the end of the year. Then we have to go into our prep mode and then we’ll start. So release dates, I’m sure with every production from Dave’s stuff to our stuff, who knows right now.”
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum ended with John and the Bowery King (played by Laurence Fishburne) agreeing to partner against the High Table, going to war with the overseers of the world of assassins.
There is a good shot we’ll see plenty of surviving characters make a return including Halle Berry’s Sofia.
COVID-19 has impacted most if not all of the upcoming productions for major studio films and it’s currently unclear when Matrix 4 will resume production in Germany.
Lionsgate certainly is attempting to etch-out a strong 2022 release date for the action film.
