Studio estimates via BoxOfficePro have revealed that John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum has finally taken the domestic box office throne from Avengers: Endgame opening to number one this weekend. The current data from Lionsgate suggests a debut total of $57 million, a franchise high as this would see the film almost double the opening of John Wick: Chapter 2.
However, there is a good chance that studio estimates could be slightly low and the actuals will show the film made more in the low $60 million range.
On the global front, according to Deadline, the film is looking a global debut of around $92.2 million, which could a little more. John Wick 3’s budget was around $55 million, so this opening weekend certainly means that Lionsgate will eventually be making a mint off the film.
The R-rated action franchise is cementing its status as appointment viewing with audiences when the genre is mostly relegated to PG-13 studio releases, the John Wick movies are indeed growing a following thanks to the world building and unrelenting/inventive action sequences. The ending of John Wick 3 certainly leaves room for more movies and we’re curious when Lionsgate will officially announce John Wick: Chapter 4, considering the box office success already.
Avengers: Endgame is slowly creeping up to the Avatar global tally as the film earned $29.4 million this weekend domestically for a total of $770.8 million and a worldwide total of $2.615 billion. It beat Avatar domestically this weekend but unlikely will be surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ record-smashing $936.6 million.
Aladdin is coming next weekend and is expected to see Disney pull a majority of screens away from Avengers: Endgame to accommodate audiences, making it next to impossible for Avengers: Endgame to take the domestic box office record from The Force Awakens.
