There are plenty of unmade sequels in the world of Hollywood and for one reason they never get made. The stories behind some of the unmade ones can sometimes boggle the mind why studios never pursued them.

Director Joel Schumacher (Flatliners, A Time To Kill, The Client, 8mm) has now revealed to EmpireMagazine (spotted by MovieHole) in the newest issue that he wanted another movie set in the universe of his 1987 vampire flick The Lost Boys starring Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Dianne West, Alex Winter, and Jason Patric.

First, it had already been reported a while back that a prequel titled The Lost Boys: The Beginning set during 1906 in San Francisco, California had been written by Near Dark screenwriter Eric Red. This would make sense given the immortal and ageless nature of vampires. It also very well could have echoed stuff like Brad Pitt’s An Interview With A Vampire, but with more of an edge to it.

The second one revealed in this new interview would have been a female-centric sequel starring Drew Barrymore (Scream, Charlie’s Angels, E.T.) and Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction) that would see Kiefer Sutherland’s David teaming-up with a new crew of female vampires, despite David’s death in the first film.

The Lost Boys certainly made its money back earning $32.2 domestically on a budget of $8.5 million, but for whatever reason, Warner Bros. decided against giving Schumacher his sequel or the prequel from Eric Red.

The horror movie was rediscovered in the home video market during the 1990s elevating it to cult status and has been considered a highlight of the genre from that era.

Speaking of the 1990s, that same decade would give us the feature film version of Buffy The Vampire Slayer in 1992 distributed by 20th Century Fox, focusing on a popular teenage cheerleader turned vampire slayer (played by Kristy Swanson) that film was set in Los Angeles, California and was spun-off into the massively popular Joss Whedon series. Oddly enough, Kiefer’s father Donald Sutherland played Buffy’s mentor Merrick Jamison-Smythe in the horror-comedy.

It’s kind of interesting to think what would have happened to Buffy The Vampire Slayer if Joel had made The Lost Girls in the 80s or early 90s before Fox/Joss Whedon tackled Buffy.

Instead of making these two sequels, Warner Bros. decided to release two cheaply made direct-to-video ones with Lost Boys: The Tribe in 2008 and Lost Boys: The Thirst in 2010.

Also, a new television series pilot from CW is on the horizon.

THE LOST BOYS: Teenage brothers Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim) move with their mother (Dianne Wiest) to a small town in northern California. While the younger Sam meets a pair of kindred spirits in geeky comic-book nerds Edward (Corey Feldman) and Alan (Jamison Newlander), the angst-ridden Michael soon falls for Star (Jami Gertz) — who turns out to be in thrall to David (Kiefer Sutherland), leader of a local gang of vampires. Sam and his new friends must save Michael and Star from the undead.
