While speaking with Inverse to promote the upcoming release of 21 Bridges, producer Joe Russo (one half of the directing duo The Russo Brothers) revealed some interest in getting involved with the Moon Knight series that Marvel Studios is making for Disney+.
INVERSE: Speaking of Marvel, with Disney+ bringing a ton of new characters to the MCU, are there any that you’d want to work on as a Disney+ show?
JOE RUSSO: “Moon Knight would be fun. It’s hard to say because we’re in the middle of Cherry right now. We’re on location in Cleveland shooting at the moment. But anything Marvel does is going to be special. And we’ve had such an amazing working relationship with them that I’m sure we’re all gonna find something to come back together.”
Like Joe says, they’re busy working on Tom Holland’s crime flick Cherry and while Marvel Studios is casting the lead role of Marc Spector/Moon Knight when filming begins is currently unknown.
If they’ve wrapped Cherry and are deep enough in post-production they could jump in to direct an episode or two. However, it remains to be seen who will ultimately direct the series as The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Loki seemingly have one director tackling the entire series.
Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four, Umbrella Company) was recently announced as the lead writer of Moon Knight and we’ll be interested to hear who else will get involved with it.
The hero is ostensibly Marc Spector, a mercenary who has numerous after egos – cabbie Jake Lockley and millionaire playboy Steven Grant – in order to better fight the criminal underworld. But later he was established as being a conduit for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Most recently, he was a consultant who dresses in all-white and goes by the name Mr. Knight.
Marvel Studios has yet to announce when they expect episodes to begin airing but if filming starts in 2020, dropping in summer/fall 2021 isn’t hard to imagine.
