MTVNews was attending CinemaCon and were able to speak with the Russo Brothers, who were there to promote Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame. Asking the directing duo what would coax them to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Joe Russo reaffirmed their desire to tackle another massive superhero event with Secret Wars.
MTV: We’ve talked and you’ve talked to others about your love of Wolverine, Fantastic Four, Secret Wars. Of those three, which is the one that’s gonna pull you back in a couple of years to the MCU?
JOE RUSSO: “I keep saying Secret Wars, cause that was one of the first books that I really fell in love with as a kid, was Secret Wars. This notion of like, you know, event storytelling, and I think that’s part of the reason that we gravitate so strongly towards these event films and these ensemble films. The notion that like you can contain so many different characters, and so many different points of view, and galvanize them around a story point. Is really compelling to us.”
And when asked about making a DC Comics movie, Joe replied: ‘Never say never’.

Once the X-Men and Fantastic Four are settled into the Marvel Cinematic Universe there is a good chance that Secret Wars could be the next big thing in the MCU, as the Disney-Fox merger completed last month with the Fox Marvel rights returning to Marvel Studios. It was recently confirmed at CinemaCon that Disney will make more Deadpool films (presumably with Ryan Reynolds under the mask) and will indeed reboot the main X-Men franchise as Dark Phoenix was also officially revealed during the week as the “final chapter” in the Fox version of the franchise.
It’s kind of unclear when something like Secret Wars would actually take place considering they’d need to build up to it over the next couple of years like Marvel did with Civil War and Infinity War/Endgame.
The Russo Brothers will next tackle a smaller project titled Cherry that is expected to star Tom Holland as a former Army medic turned bank robber.
Avengers: Endgame will be released on April 26th.
