British actress Jessica Henwick is quickly gobbling-up genre roles with Game of Thrones, Marvel’s Iron Fist, The Matrix 4, Godzilla vs Kong, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the recent Fox release of Underwater.
While speaking with TheHollywoodReporter, Henwick reveals that she originally auditioned to play the role of new Jedi heroine Rey in J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens, before taking a much smaller role as the Resistance pilot
With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker currently in theaters, Henwick couldn’t help but reflect on her experience on 2015’s The Force Awakens, an experience that began with her auditioning for Rey over the course of six months. Henwick also updates the status of her X-wing pilot character, Jess Pava, and whether she survived Episode IX’s final battle or not.
HENWICK: “Jess Pava is alive and well. You can read up on all her adventures in new spinoff comic books.”
“I was auditioning for a different character, actually, so I spent six months auditioning for that character. And then, at the end, J.J. said, ‘I want you to be in the film, but I want to write a character for you.’ That’s how Jess Pava was created. But, after six months, you can’t help but just desperately want [the original role]. So, I was a mess at the end of those six months.”
The role eventually went to Daisy Ridley and Rey’s story might continue in some sort of form in the future.
It’s kind of crazy to think how everyone is arguing about the treatment of Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico (fans previously furious about her inclusion in The Last Jedi) and Lucasfilm/Abrams almost had Rey played by an actress with Asian heritage.
Henwick is about to begin shooting Matrix 4 starting next month.
Underwater is currently in theaters and you can see her in Godzilla vs Kong releasing on November 20th.
