While The Expendables 4 has been long in development and was supposed to begin shooting once Sly Stallone finished up on Rambo 5, it looks like the studio might be pivoting to a spinoff led by Jason Statham’s character Lee Christmas.
TheIlluminerdi claims that the Nu Image/Millennium Films project is titled The Expendables: A Christmas Story written by Max Adams with D.J. Caruso being offered the director’s chair.
Apparently, an offer has been made to D.J. Caruso (XXX: Return of Xander Cage) to direct the Jason Statham-led spin-off tentatively titled, The Expendables: A Christmas Story, which has been written by Max Adams.
The decision to extend an offer to Caruso has a cosmic quality to it, as he was rumored to be in contention to direct the original Expendables film at one point. Furthermore, Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone are already set to return for the spin-off. The catch being that Statham is now the lead and Sly will be supporting character.
They also mention that Arnold Schwarzenegger (plays Trench Mauser) and Tony Jaa could be attached to co-star with Jason.
In addition, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tony Jaa, are attached to the project and are simply waiting to see how the pieces come together.
Both Jason Statham and Arnold Schwarzenegger have been featured in all three Expendables installments.
D.J. Caruso had been previously attached to direct Paramount’s G.I. Joe 3.
This spinoff could be happening because Statham’s Hobbs & Shaw was successful at the box office, a spinoff of the Fast & Furious franchise. Along with the fact that Stallone has been busy with other projects like Samaritan (currently filming) and the studio likely wanting to keep the Expendables brand alive.
The studio is also trying to put together a remake of the female-led fantasy film Red Sonja.
