Jared Leto seemingly is done with the Joker role according to TheHollywoodReporter he won’t be appearing in either Birds of Prey (a photo double has been used) or The Suicide Squad.
Essentially, suggesting that Leto may move on.
At this point, sources say Leto’s days as the Joker likely are over. He will not reprise the role for Warners’ upcoming DC movies Birds of Prey (a spinoff centered on Robbie’s Harley Quinn) or in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, due out in 2021. Says one person involved in the situation: “How do you play the Joker you established following [Phoenix]? It kind of ends his Joker run.”
They also report that Jared was upset with the Todd Phillips/Joaquin Phoenix film’s development he tried to get the project killed as he was trying to get two of his own Joker movies (a solo movie and a team-up with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn both seemingly now dead) made at Warner Bros. at the time.
Just how unhappy was Jared Leto over Joker? As Todd Phillips’ dark take on the villain looks likely to gross more than $700 million worldwide, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Leto’s frustration that Warner Bros. was moving ahead with the Phillips project was so great early on that he tried to throttle the rival Joker in its cradle.
Joker is looking to cross $700 million this weekend and could end up even surpassing Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice making the $55 million budgeted movie the most successful DC Comics movie post-Christopher Nolan.
Phoenix has been suggesting during the press rounds he’d be willing to make a sequel.
Leto is still working with Warner Bros. but it’s possible that he could stick to Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff Morbius and being part of Sony’s own cinematic universe that will share space with Tom Hardy’s Venom/Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.
Birds of Prey is set for release on February 7th, 2020 and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia) will be out on August 6th, 2021.
