James Wan Reveals He’s No Longer Producing The ‘Resident Evil’ Reboot

Constantin Film has been recently cooking up a new Resident Evil reboot with Greg Russo originally writing the script, which he recently stated to DiscussingFilm was influenced by Resident Evil 7. The reboot also had horror superstar James Wan attached to produce, which had a lot of skeptical people like myself curious if they’d actually go more in the horror directly than the action route that Paul W.S. Anderson went with his string of movies.

Unfourtently, James Wan himself has revealed to horror outlet BloodyDisgusting while promoting Aquaman that he’s sadly not part of the Resident Evil project anymore. A bit of a gut-punch to those of us that were actually excited about the prosect of a reboot because of his involvement.

“I’m not doing that anymore,” Wan said. “That has been dropped.”

“They announce that I’m attached to a lot of stuff and a lot of them are not necessarily real,” Wan said. “It’s kind of annoying when things come and go, or things never came in the first place. I hate it when my projects get announced. It makes it seem like I’m attached to a lot of things when in fact I’m not necessarily doing so many things. A lot of my stuff just get announced and I don’t want them to be announced but people love to announce them.”

News recently broke from Variety that they had hired 47 Meters Down’s Johannes Roberts to direct and rewrite the script. There is a good chance that Russo’s script could be completely overhauled and whatever the project was supposed to be could look very different once cameras start rolling. I knew something was fishy when Wan’s name was missing in the trade report announcing the new director.

The worrying aspect here is that the studio could end up spitting out a generic teen jump scare cash-grab and ignore what fans have been asking for, an actual frightening horror film set in the Resident Evil world. Wan’s attachment as a producer gave some hope they were heading in the right direction. I remember genuinely being creeped out but the video games but the previous movies were anything but scary.

Then again, they could actually give us something decent but this news of Wan’s exit isn’t the most exciting thing to happen to the reboot.

A production start is currently unknown as the film’s script undergoes rewrites but Variety is optimistic it could shoot sometime in 2019.
