Less than a week after Disney severed ties with James Gunn, fans of the director have banded together and created multiple online petitions for Disney to re-hire the famous director.
Though it seems unlikely that Disney will go back on their decision, the petitions have made quite the headway in the news. One of the most active petitions has already garnered 300,000 signatures of support.
Though not all of the petitions are trying to reinstate Gunn, the petition named “Re-hire James Gunn,” is aiming at showing their support for the director, as well as showing Disney, and Marvel, that even though Gunn made some mistakes in his past, it shouldn’t be negatively impacting his current career. In their own words, “I’m smart enough to know this most likely won’t change anything but hopefully, this could get Disney to realize the mistake they made and not do it again in the future,” the petition reads.
They continue by stating, “I agree on the point that if people say a bunch of stupid sh-t while working for a studio, the studio has full right to fire him over the possible controversy,” it continues. “This situation is very different though as he made these jokes years before he was working for Disney and also the fact that they were jokes. I agree with most, including Gunn himself that the jokes were shitty and un-funny but they were still jokes, it wasn’t an opinion or a statement, it was just a bad attempt at being funny.”
In addition to fans showing their support via the internet, Gunn’s co-stars such as Dave Bautista, Karen Gillian, Pom Klementieff, and the directors brother, Sean Gunn, have all used online media platforms to make their support for Gunn known.
