In the first sit down interview since the announcement that he was rehired by Disney for Marvel Studios’ Guardians of The Galaxy 3, writer-director James Gunn talked to Deadline about the firing/rehiring, working on The Suicide Squad, and his excitement to be able to finish the third Guardians movie.

James revealing his reaction/feelings about the responses of support for him to continue making the film.

And then came this outpouring of real love. From my girlfriend Jen; my producer and my agents; Chris Pratt calling me and freaking out; Zoe Saldana and Karen Gillan, all calling and crying. Sylvester Stallone FaceTime-ing me. And, of course, Dave Bautista, who came out so strong. That amount of love that I felt from my friends, my family, and the people in the community was absolutely overwhelming. In order for me to have fully felt that love for the first time, the thing that needed to happen was the apparatus by which I was feeling falsely loved had to be completely taken away.

When the subject pivoted to Guardians of The Galaxy 3 plans, Gunn revealed that the film will attempt to finish Rocket Raccoon’s story/arc.

I relate to Rocket and I feel compassion for Rocket, but I also feel like his story has not been completed. He has an arc that started in the first movie, continued into the second and goes through Infinity War and Endgame, and then I was set to really finish that arc in Guardians 3. That was a big loss to me—not being able to finish that story—though I was comforted by the fact that they were still planning to use my script.

There had been rumblings recently that the film would include  The High Evolutionary as the creator of Rocket. Other potential additions could include Rocket’s Otter girlfriend Lylla and Drax’s daughter Moondragon.

Along with some hints that Star Wars franchise actor Mark Hamill could end up playing a role in the film after some meetings with Gunn, he could certainly be another iconic casting hire not unlike Sly Stallone and Kurt Russell in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2.

If we’re truly getting a Rocket-focused movie I’m kind of hoping we get to see Halfworld and characters like the blue fur/red eyed anatomical cutthroat rabbit Blackjack O’Hare, which is one of my favorites from the solo Rocket comics.

According to trades,  Guardians 3 is looking to begin filming sometime in 2020 once Gunn finishes up on The Suicide Squad, which likely means towards the end of the year.
