Yesterday, writer/director James Gunn took to Twitter during a “Quarantine Watch Party” for the original Guardians of The Galaxy film and pointed out certain things about scenes/characters along with answering a few fan questions.
One of those questions including one about the future of Rocket Raccoon, a fan asked if Guardians of The Galaxy 3 will explore Rocket’s origins. James Gunn responded with the following coy answer.
GUNN: “I’ll just say Rocket is a big part of what’s happening in the future – and a lot of this stuff (like the scars we’re about to see on his back) sets up what I’ve been planning for Rocket all along.”

This may support some previous statements made by the director about completing Rocket’s story/arc.
GUNN: “I relate to Rocket and I feel compassion for Rocket, but I also feel like his story has not been completed. He has an arc that started in the first movie, continued into the second and goes through Infinity War and Endgame, and then I was set to really finish that arc in Guardians 3. That was a big loss to me—not being able to finish that story—though I was comforted by the fact that they were still planning to use my script.”
Some early rumors about the film that suggested characters such as Drax’s daughter Moondragon, Rocket’s girlfriend Lylla (an anthropomorphic otter teased in the original film) and The High Evolutionary.
Rocket's creator is the High Evolutionary, Drax is in for a big surprise when he discovers his daughter is alive. Rocket also gets a love interest in the form of Lylla. Nebula and Star Lord will grow into closer friends.

Despite chatter that Mark Hamill was up for a villain role, Gunn debunked that stating he’s never talked to Hamill about the film. He also pointed out that Adam Warlock isn’t in the sequel and would take place after the events of Takia Waititi’s Thor: Love & Thunder.
Chris Pratt recently teased the potential of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor being part of the team.
Guardians of The Galaxy 3 as pointed out by James Gunn has a script, however, has yet to land an official release date as the director is currently busy with the post-production of The Suicide Squad and plans to get out in theaters on August 6th, 2021.
When filming will begin remains to be seen as the coronavirus has made things increasingly unpredictable.
