The mystery has been solved, Curb Your Enthusiasm comedian J.B. Smoove is officially playing a teacher named Mr. Dell in Spider-Man: Far From Home according to producer Eric Carroll, who confirmed this while speaking with ScreenRant during a set visit.
Producer Eric Carroll confirmed that Smoove is playing a teacher named Mr. Dell, who accompanies the Midtown School of Science and Technology students on their European field trip – and he won’t be alone.
The comedic actor made a big impression on the producers after playing a driving instructor for an Audi promo video that was a tie-in to the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Mr. Dell and Martin Starr’s Mr. Harrington have been tasked to chaperone the Midtown students during their trip across Europe. Hiring another comedian to play another teacher isn’t terribly shocking given that Martin Starr and Hannibal Buress were cast as other teachers at Peter Parker’s school.
“We’re also bringing back Martin Starr as the hapless Mr. Harrington,” Carroll said. “Together [with Mr. Dell], they constitute the least-capable group of chaperones ever to be sent to Europe with a bunch of kids.”
“When we knew we wanted a teacher to be escorting these kids across Europe, he was our first choice,” the producer explained. Then the laughs provided by the Audi commercial seemed to pair perfectly with the kind of tone set by Starr’s school antics, “So, sure enough, now we’ve got these two as this amazing comedic pair showing these kids around Europe.”
“Martin Starr, he’s like, ‘Okay, kids, there’s a water monster. So, maybe we’ll-‘, and then you’ve got J.B. Smoove doing the exact opposite. ‘Are you guys seeing this?!’. As funny as each of these actors have proven to be on their own, it’s certain that they’ll be even more hysterical as a unit.”
Some of the early fan expectations for the character included theories that he was playing one of The Elementals or even the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Parker’s boss at the Daily Bugle, J.J. Jonah Jameson. Those suspicions have been seemingly extinguished.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is set for release on July 2nd.
