Idris Elba is leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be joining forces with DC. However, it not the role we all thought it would be.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor who just finished shooting Hobbs & Shaw, is now in talks to play Deadshot in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
The trade also details that the film will consist of a mostly new team roster with Warner Bros extremely happy with the screenplay for the film. has dated the film for an August 2021 release, a release that gave Gunn success with the first Guardians of the Galaxy film.
The film has been given the new title of The Suicide Squad, keeping in line with the relaunch aspect . The 2016 movie, directed by David Ayer, featured characters Deadshot, Harley Quinn, The Joker, Captain Boomerang and Amanda Waller, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences.
Insiders note that Gunn’s focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with mostly an all-new cast of characters and actors. Given this information, it is unclear if the film will remain apart of the current DCEU or operate outside of it. Sources also say that the project is also very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies.
Charles Roven and Peter Safran will produce the feature. Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder are acting as executive producers.
