‘Hustle & Flow’ Director Boards ‘Coming To America 2’

The long in development sequel to Coming to America with Eddie Murphy set to return is finally coming together. As the film has finally found its director.

According to Deadline, Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) has signed on to direct the film. Black-ish creator Kenya Harris is currently rewriting the script from original Coming to America screenwriters Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield.

Eddie Murphy released a statement regarding the addition of Brewer.
“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward, We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”
In the original, Prince Akeem (Murphy) journeys to America from his wealthy African nation of Zamunda to escape an arranged marriage and find a wife who loves him as a person, not for his royal status.

In the sequel, Akeem returns to America after learning about his long-lost son who is the heir to the throne. The intention is to bring back the original cast which includes Arsenio Hall, who played the prince’s aide Semmi, Shari Headley, who was courted by the prince when he went undercover as a fast food worker, John Amos, who played her father, and James Earl Jones, who played the king.

There is no start date, but the hope is that production begins in 2019.
Brewer and Murphy are currently working together on the Netflix movie Dolemite Is My Name. Which does not yet have a premiere date.
