Deadline reports that Lionsgate that they have added recent Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant (Logan, Star Wars: Episode IX) and Antonio Banderas (Desperado, Assassins) to the cast of their action film Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.
The film is a sequel to Hitman’s Bodyguard a relative successful release that starred Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson as a professional bodyguard Michael Bryce and an international assassin named Kincaid, respectfully. The sequel will see previous co-star Salma Hayek get a bigger role reprising the character Sonia, she’ll likely take the third spot as one of the film’s main leads. She played Jackson’s wife in the first film.
Banderas previously worked with director Patrick Hughes on The Expendables 3 and co-starred with Hayek on the fantastic Robert Rodriguez films Desperado and Once Upon A Time In Mexico. Grant will reprise his role from the last movie, in that film he played one of Ryan’s clients.
Veteran actor Morgan Freeman (Wanted) and Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) had also recently joined the film according to trade reports.
Ryan recently posted a set photo with himself and Sam/Salma on social media announcing the start of production on the film.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the original as I felt it was slightly generic for me, there is some hope that they studio will give them a bigger budget to play with and attempting larger/interesting action sequences. Greg Powell (London Has Fallen, Fast and Furious 6) is back as the film’s stunt coordinator and there is some hope they’ll let him make something memorable.
Lionsgate will likely give Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard a release date in early 2020.
