Beware if you consider character details from Avengers: Endgame spoilers those are ahead, you’ve been warned.

For over a year we’ve been trying to figure out if Hiroyuki Sanada was playing a good or a bad guy in Avengers: Endgame, and it looks that has been finally answered by actor himself.

While speaking with Variety on the red carpet premiere of Avengers: Endgame, Japanese actor and legendary action star Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine, Sunshine, The Last Samurai) revealed his character’s name, what he does, and who he interacts with from the Avengers.

VARIETY: Tell us all about your character.

SANADA: “I play Akihiko, Yakuza boss in Tokyo. So somebody comes to Tokyo City and I fight against him.”

VARIETY: Who did you get to fight against?

SANADA: “A new character in this film named Ronin.”

Akihiko is a real Yakuza character from the comics and is from the science division of the criminal syndicate called The Shogun Reapers. It’s possible the Yakuza members in the film have modified themselves with cybernetics or other means. The character also has a connection to Nick Fury.

The Yakuza fight scene was something I first reported a while back at OmegaUnderground, and it’s nice to get some confirmation there for my past reporting on the film.

Interesting enough, because of his role in Avengers: Endgame he had to turn down a villain role in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

Avengers: Endgame is set to be released on April 26th.
