Henry Cavill Recalls Being Called “Chubby” By ‘Casino Royale’ Director Martin Campbell During His Bond Audition

With The Witcher’s release on Netflix on the horizon it’s worth noting a little bit of trivia about actor Henry Cavill, he actually auditioned to play Superman before eventually landing the role years later in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.

That wasn’t the only franchise role Cavill was turned down for as he also auditioned for the role of James Bond for what ended up to be Casino Royale, the role going to current 007 Daniel Craig.

Henry has now revealed why didn’t land the Bond role while speaking with Men’s Health that ultimately he didn’t have the physique they were looking far as director Martin Campbell called him “chubby” during the audition.

His most infamous tryout took place in the mid-’00s, when he was up for a role that seemed well suited to his black-tie-ready handsomeness and deep-voiced dryness: James Bond. To screen-test, he had to walk out of a bathroom wrapped in a towel and reenact a scene from one of the Sean Connery–era films. “I probably could have prepared better,” Cavill says. “I remember the director, Martin Campbell, saying, ‘Looking a little chubby there, Henry.’ I didn’t know how to train or diet. And I’m glad Martin said something, because I respond well to truth. It helps me get better.”

Cavill recalls being the 002 choice for 007, losing out to Daniel Craig. It was the beginning of a long run that positioned him as runner-up…

This tidbit reaffirms that Hollywood body standards aren’t just for actresses they also translate to their male counterparts as well, even more so with leading franchise roles. It also kind of refreshing to hear that even someone like Henry has had to deal with his own body issues throughout his life including his childhood.

He eventually got to play American spies in Guy Ritchie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout opposite Tom Cruise.

It’s not impossible that we could see Cavill play a spy again in the near future.

TheHollywoodReporter mentioned back in January that both Henry Cavill and Alec Baldwin could be reprising their Mission: Impossible roles in flashback sequences for Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 (as we’ve reported will shoot at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden next year).

And here’s an intriguing tidbit: as part of this web, McQuarrie is said to be considering bringing back the characters played by Alec Baldwin and Henry Cavill, via flashbacks. Obviously, the scripts have to still be written so things could change, but there’s a chance the most famous moustache on the Internet could get a second act.

Although, this hasn’t been confirmed.

The only confirmed cast members with those two sequels include Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson (Dune), Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter, Captain America: The First Avenger), and Pom (Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2).

Cavill is said to begin shooting the second season of The Witcher starting in January in London, England (we’re thinking at Shepperton Studios in Surrey).

Funny that both The Witcher and the Mission: Impossible sequels will be shooting in London next year at the same time.

Anyways, we’ll keep our fingers crossed if that sort of thing well help make this happen.
