On Sunday, HBO released the first teaser trailer for the third season of their science fiction thriller series Westworld. The trailer seems to have revealed that the new season may have pivoted to a new character played by Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul and might end up spending most of its time away from the parks entirely focusing on the futuristic outside world, which doesn’t seem to be terribly pleasant.
According to HBO programming president Casey Bloys, the new season is not so much a reboot as they will be following characters from the previous season, which sounds more the show could be pivoting towards a soft-reboot than a hard one. Bloys made the comment on the trailer during an in-depth interview with Deadline.
DEADLINE: Speaking of Westworld, the trailer you just released looks very different. Is the show going for a reboot in Season 3?
BLOYS: “Not so much of a reboot. At the end of the season, Dolores was going off. So it was a little bit of a tease to see what the world might look like. All I will say is, it still has robots in it but it’s not so much a reboot as it is following the characters.”
Joining the new season alongside Aaron Paul include Vincent Cassel and Lena Waithe.
The second Westworld film was called Futureworld and it was yet another park in the Delos collective, something to keep in mind about the trailer.
As the trailer points out the new season of Westworld won’t begin airing until sometime in 2020.
