According to The Hollywood Reporter, Margot Robbie’s Barbie film will be written by Oscar-nominated filmmakers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.
Gerwig is also being eyed to take over directing duties on the Mattel/Warner Bros. project. Both her and Baumbach have been partners for years, collaborating on projects such as Mistress America and Frances Ha. Birds of Prey’s Margot Robbie is set to star in the titular role while producing through the Lucky Chap films banner.
Their addition to the long-gestating project is likely due to their Oscar-caliber talent and quirky sense of style. Baumbach’s latest project is a divorce drama-comedy Netflix flick starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. Greta Gerwig is currently working on the Little Women adaptation starring Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Saoirse Ronan as the March sisters.
Amy Schumer was originally attached when the film was under Sony, but then Anne Hathaway replaced her with Alethea Jones at the director’s chair. It was widely reported that Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins was being eyed to join the project before Gerwig and Baumbach were on the table.
