Warner Bros. might be a little underwhelmed with how Godzilla: King of The Monsters did this weekend as while it took the top spot from Aladdin, it fell very short of what the last Godzilla installment made opening weekend.

According to BoxOfficePro here are the early weekend estimates for the top five films.

  • Godzilla: King of The Monsters – $49.5 million
  • Aladdin – $41 million
  • Rocketman – $22 million
  • Ma – $18 million
  • John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – $10.7 million

This would suggest a rather large domestic opening dip between 2014’s Godzilla which earned an impressive $93 million and I’m sure with the extra spending on marketing will likely see Warner Bros. be a little concerned on how much to spend on the marketing campaign for Godzilla vs Kong.

However, there are some more upbeat box office stories as John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum has now become the biggest earner in the John Wick franchise as it crosses $200 million globally this weekend.

Disney’s Aladdin easily crossed $300 million as it looks towards $400-500 million very soon.

20th Century Fox’s Elton John biopic Rocketman starring Taron Egerton and Richard Madden opened strong considering it’s $52 million budget and with Bohemian Rhapsody recently earning $903.6 million globally audiences are certainly willing to support these types of biopics. Rocketman could certainly have some strong legs and might do very well overseas.

Blumhouse/Univeral’s horror flick Ma starring Octavia Spencer may have only earned $18 million but the movie only cost $5 million to make easily giving them another profitable film.

Next weekend should be interesting with the final main X-Men film Dark Phoenix going head-to-head with The Secret Life of Pets 2.
