At one time, there was another hopeful Spider-Man spinoff film coming from Sony Pictures titled Silver & Black, the film would see female Spider-Man characters such as jewel thief Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat and mercenary Silver Sablinova aka Silver Sable teaming up for a feature film.
The film almost went into production with director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, Cloak & Dagger) and had the release date of February 8th, 2019. Gina was reportedly rewriting a script previously penned by Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok, Cowboy Bebop, The Mandalorian, Masters of The Universe)
Multiple delays and a couple of major script leaks seemed to have been part of the reason the film never came to together with Black Cat and Silver Sable said to be instead of getting solo films instead of being paired-up. There hasn’t been any movement on the projects since.
Gina instead went on to direct Charlize Theron in the comic book film The Old Guard for Netflix.
However, an update from Silver & Black’s former director suggests that a series might be in the cards.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gina suggests that the new plan might be giving the female duo a limited series on Disney+ which would likely mean that Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios would be making it.
PRINCE-BYTHEWOOD: “That’s a book! Things are the status quo on my side. I really love that project, and I do hope it can still happen in some way. It keeps going through different thoughts. First, it was going to be the two of them, and then the decision was made to separate the two. Now, there’s a thought of ‘Hey, maybe we put it on Disney+ as a limited series,’ but I loved it more as a film with the two of them. So, my hope is that one day it can still happen.
This would suggest much more corporation between Marvel Studios and Sony might be going on behind the scenes than we’ve seen previously. If Silver & Black was ultimately given a series on Disney+ it would automatically mean it was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe just like Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and the upcoming Spider-Man 3.
The recent trailer for Morbius confirmed that film connects directly to solo the Spider-Man films via Michael Keaton reprising the role of Adrian Toomes aka Vulture and there is a chance that Venom: Let There Be Carnage could end up connecting as well.
There had been rumors/chatter of a Spider-Woman film in works from Marvel Studios and Sony, could that project have been confused with talk of a Silver & Black series? Officially, neither studio has confirmed the existence of a Spider-Woman film or this new potential series Gina mentioned.
I think if Marvel and Sony could ultimately work together to merge the two cinematic universes that would be wonderful but that has yet to be confirmed or announced by them officially.
