Sony Pictures has released the very first trailer for their upcoming hard-canon Ghostbusters sequel from writer/director Jason Reitman (Juno, Up In The Air).
The trailer finally confirms that the family that moves to the small town is related to Egon Spengler, who seemingly kept up his work after the busters seemingly broke up sometime after Ghostbusters II.
It’s certainly fitting given that Egon actor Harold Ramis died years back (severing the energy to make a Ghostbusters 3 with the original cast and leading to Paul Feig’s reboot) and having the character dying being the plot point to get the new film going would make sense.
However, it looks like the grandkids aren’t even aware who the Ghostbusters are as Paul Rudd’s character, a science teacher, fills in the kids about them after they discover a ghost trap.

From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film is written by Jason Reitman & Gil Kenan.
We’re also expected to see a bulk of the original cast show up in the film, but Rick Moranis is unlikely given his retirement from the industry.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set for release on July 8th, 2020.
