While writer/director George Miller is busy getting ready to shoot his next feature film Three Thousand Years of Longing starring Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok, The Suicide Squad) and Tilda Swinton (Doctor Strange) he has now revealed a Mad Max update during an interview with Deadline.
Three Thousand Years of Longing is next, but Miller says they’re already starting prep on the Mad Max: Fury Road sequel (he was planning on two more movies and said previously he has two scripts) and he indeed plans on making it after Longing.
MILLER: “I’m not done with the Mad Max story and I think you have to be a multi-tasker and there’s certainly another Mad Max coming down the pike after this.”
“We’re in preparation on that as well. It’s an interesting question, the idea of multi-tasking. I discuss this with other filmmakers and I think what happens to me is that when you’re working on one thing, and you get so distracted and focused on that one thing, it’s like a creative holiday to focus on the other one for a bit. It helps you achieve that objectivity, to look at the thing afresh each time and say, I thought I was doing this, but it doesn’t seem to be the case now.”
Prep likely means he’s just starting building up the world which will take years to do with designing the characters, vehicles, and production design with concept artists. He did extensive work on Fury Road which obviously turned out be the right thing to do and hopefully, they’re taking their time here as well.
There had been some question if the sequels would even happen as a bonus dispute between Miller and Warner Bros. had been causing friction. It sounds like the current situation isn’t as bad it was previously presented to be.
One of the films would focus on Tom Hardy’s Max and the other would focus on Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, we don’t know which one would come first until they announced it officially.
However, there is a likelihood that Sony Pictures will want Tom Hardy to make a third Venom movie or reprise the role in something else within the Spider-Man universe, that would need to be factored in as well.
Years after the collapse of civilization, the tyrannical Immortan Joe enslaves apocalypse survivors inside the desert fortress the Citadel. When the warrior Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) leads the despot’s five wives in a daring escape, she forges an alliance with Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), a loner and former captive. Fortified in the massive, armored truck the War Rig, they try to outrun the ruthless warlord and his henchmen in a deadly high-speed chase through the Wasteland.
