It’s official that Game of Thrones series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have landed an overall deal worth nine figures with Netflix after a large bidding war broke out to woo the two showrunners/producers.
The pair released a statement concerning the deal which was confirmed by trades today.
“We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home. Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same ‘80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”
They’ll be writing, producing, and directing various films and series for the streaming service.
I’ll be certainly curious to see what they’ll end up cooking at Netflix over the next couple of years.
It’s a little interesting that Benioff and Weiss are only mentioned as writers and producers on their upcoming original Star Wars trilogy for Lucasfilm/Disney as they’ve been thought to be potentially directing some of those movies.
