One of the most popular video games of all time is inching closer to the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Frozen 2 screenwriter Allison Schroeder will tackle the Minecraft film adaptation for Warner Bros.
The Oscar-nominated screenwriter for Hidden Figures will lend her proven skills to finally get the ball rolling on a Minecraft movie. Peter Sollett is attached to direct the upcoming film and his most recent credits include 2015’s Freeheld, which starred Julianne Moore, Ellen Page and several other high-profile actors. Producing the video game adaptation are Roy Lee, Jon Berg and game developer Mojang.
Allison Schroeder is only the latest talent to take a crack at the long-gestating project. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor Rob McElhenney was previously attached to direct before he left in August of last year. Warner Bros. has been developing the film ever since they acquired the rights back in 2014.
The video game phenomenon has allowed players to create and survive in a blocky digital world where they practically can do whatever that want. There is no built-in narrative so the film must forge its own path to success.
Minecraft is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
