Stranger Things’ Shawn Levy (Reel Steel) will be directing Ryan Reynolds in an original science fiction action film for 20th Century Fox titled Free Guy. It sounds like a mix between Gamer meets Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle meets Reboot meets Wreck-It Ralph. Certainly an interesting concept, the execution is a little unknown at the moment.
Free Guy centers on a background character who realizes he’s living in a video game. With the help of an avatar named Molotov Girl, he tries to prevent the makers of the game from shutting down his world.
We’ve been able to add some new production and crew updates on the film.
HN Entertainment has now learned that production designer Ethan Tobman (Kin, Room, The Report) and supervising art director Beat Frutiger (Ghostbusters, Dolemite Is My Name).
Ethan’s work on Kin certainly screams live-action video game world.
Beat’s other art direction film credits include Star Trek, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Batman v Superman, Live Free or Die Hard, and Transformers.
Last week, we confirmed that Free Guy’s crew would include cinematographer George Richmond (Rocketman, Tomb Raider, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle) and stunt coordinator Chris O’Hara (Venom, Red Sparrow, Hobbs & Shaw, Jurassic World, The Bourne Legacy).
Also, we previously confirmed that filming will be primarily taking place in Boston, Massachusetts. There is also a chance that some scenes might be filmed in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as well.
Ryan is said to complete filming on Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard around May 24th and it’s expected that Free Guy will shoot next.
Joining Ryan in Free Guy includes Jodie Comer (Death on The Nile, Killing Eve) as Molotov Girl, Joe Keery (Stranger Things), and Lil Rey Howery (Get Out).
20th Century Fox has given Free Guy a prime summer spot next year on July 3rd, 2020.
