Fox Searchlight has been working a J.R.R. Tolkien biopic titled Tolkien starring Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins, focusing on his early days and his entering into the Great War which helps inspire his beloved Middle-Earth novels The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings. They’ve now released the first trailer for the film where we’ll see him navigate friendships, love, in the time of a World War.
TOLKIEN explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.

The biopic is directed by Dome Kraukoski with a script from David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford.
Even as a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, I know very little about the man’s life and his time serving in the British military during World War I, I’m sort of interested in this movie because of all the gaps it looks like it could fill there. Even if it’s taking creative liberties because all films based on true stories do.
Tolkien is set for release by Fox Searchlight on May 10th.
