The perpetually delayed 20th Century Studios super-hero movie with a horrific take is now set to release in theaters on August 28th. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, many films have been delayed or pushed back as the uncertainly of reopening has made things tough for studios to predict where to date certain films.
There had been speculation/teases that The New Mutants could be heading to VOD or Disney+ streaming. But no, Disney still believes the film could be released in theaters traditionally. A pre-order listing for a digital copy appeared on Amazon but was quickly taken down.
The New Mutants was one of the final productions from 20th Century Fox before Disney took over and renaming the studio 20th Century Studios, along with taking over the distribution of multiple feature films. There had been talk that the film was waiting on the busy cast to reshoot sequences but that hasn’t happened and they’ll be going with the original version of the film.
The movie is a spinoff from X-Men where young mutants are trapped in a secret facility with a dubious doctor (Cecília Reyes) played by Alice Braga. The cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana/Magik; Maisie Williams as Rahne/ Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam/Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto/Sunspot and Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar.
The story goes something like this:
Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.
The movie is directed by Josh Boone, who also wrote alongside with Knate Lee. The film is based on the Marvel comics by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. Boone also directed The Fault in Our Stars and is currently working on series based on Stephen King’s The Stand for CBS All Access.
