Emily Blunt hasn’t had the best of luck with landing Marvel Cinematic Universe roles.
First, she was originally cast as Black Widow in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 only to be removed from the role via 20th Century Fox, who forced her off Iron Man 2 via a contract option instead giving her a supporting role in the forgettable Jack Black comedy Gulliver’s Travels.
Secondly, she was then in the mix to play Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, ironically her husband John Krasinski was also in the mix to play Steve Rogers (which at the time was only seen as “The Office” guy). Neither would end up joining the project.
Blunt spoke to Vulture about missing out on the Widow and Peggy roles back in 2014.
BLUNT: “Yeah, but it was never the right time, really, and it just didn’t work out scheduling-wise with those two. It’s always a difficult thing to talk about, because it’s not fair to the actresses who ended up playing them, you know? It just wasn’t the right time.”
Despite being a fan-favorite and rumored to play Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, Blunt admitted to ScreenCrush back in 2018 that she was never in the running for the part, previously chalking it up to fan-casting wishes.
BLUNT: “Oh, no, nobody ever called me about it. [Laughs] It was all untrue!”
Take the following with a grain of salt, interesting as it might be.
Yet another potential casting opportunity may have arrived according to Charles Murphy, who claims that Blunt met with Marvel Studios during the production of Jungle Crusie (shot in Atlanta) for an undisclosed role.
While filming the Disney picture Jungle Cruise, Emily Blunt met with Marvel Studios about a role in an upcoming film.
That’s it. That is all I heard. Don’t know if she signed or passed on yet another Marvel Studios role. I don’t even know what the role they discussed was. However, with the new character description (which many of us are ASSUMING is Clea) now out there, it seemed the right time to mention the meeting.
Blunt also isn’t a stranger to Disney brass having roles in Mary Poppins Returns, Into The Woods, and the aforementioned Jungle Cruise co-starring Dwayne Johnson.
The fan-theory at the moment is that she could be considered for the role of Clea (only speculation mind you) in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, however, Charles is very clear to point out he has no idea what the role is.
Some will certainly suspect this would have had to do with Fantastic Four since fan-casting both John and Emily as Reed Richards and Sue Storm have been making the rounds for over a year now.
However, despite previous rumblings of Payton Reed working on a Fantastic Four film next, he is instead tackling Ant-Man 3 set to begin shooting at Pinewood Studios UK in 2021 and we haven’t had any concrete information about the status of a Fantastic Four reboot.
While there have been rumblings of Young Avengers connections to the third Ant-Man film, no ties to Fantastic Four have been revealed.
There are multiple MCU projects in the works and anything is possible including a role in one of the upcoming Disney+ series.
Charles also mentions that the meeting could lead to nothing, which isn’t hard to imagine given that she’s already missed out on two previous roles in the past.
We should be cautious because as Blunt has pointed out before rumors of her being in the running for Captain Marvel weren’t exactly true and a premature meeting with Marvel as pointed-out could lead to nothing.
It should also be noted that when Marvel Studios met with Mahershala Ali, they didn’t offer him the Blade role he specifically asked for it. With that example being established there is a chance that Blunt might have been able to ask about various Marvel characters rather than them pitching someone to her.
Blunt is expected to reprise the role of Rita alongside Tom Cruise in Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow sequel, which may begin shooting as soon as Cruise completes his two Mission: Impossible sequels set to shoot back-to-back.
Who would you like to see Emily Blunt play in a future MCU film?
